Oxkintok is located 45 minutes drive west of Uxmal and an hour drive southwest of Merida. The road from Uxmal is new and wide and mostly un-used. Visit Oxkintok if you are staying in Merida, Uxmal, Hacienda Santa Rose, Hacienda Temozon, or Hacienda Katanchel. You could even visit if staying in Celestun though the trip would be a long day.
Passing by jungle and cornfields and a few machete wielding field hands walking or riding bicycles, you will come to the turnoff to Oxkintok, a journey well worth the effort. The road, somewhat paved, is lined with more cornfields. As you proceed, the road loses much of its concrete pavement and narrows as the cornstalks crowd over. You will think you missed a turn or two. Then you come to Oxkintok, a medium sized site of low-rise structures, partially and beautifully restored, and virtually unvisited. There is an official state employee there to greet you and usually some cold soft drinks.
Along the Oxkintok road you will pass signs for the Oxkintok caves, run by a local family. Wear clothes you can afford to get dirty. See the ruins first.
