XTAMPU Ruins
Xtampu is located on the gulf coast north of Merida and is one of the most
interesting sites I have visited. To visit Xtampu, from Merida go to Progresso then
take the coast road east a half hour or so.
Xtampu also spelled Xtambu or Xtampo is divided into two sites. The first site consists of restored salt ponds where Maya from all over the peninsula trekked
to obtain salted fish.
The second section is fifteen minutes inland. Numerous structures have been
partially restored by Spanish archaeologists. The structures are low rise but high
enough that from at least one pyramid you can see coastal estuaries.
ou will also see a mix of cultures where the Conquistadores destroyed a pyramid and erected a small church on the base.
